Hawks soar over Hampton, 3-1

Hampton, Va. - Senior Chavanca Hokins (Dallas, Texas/Lincoln High School) turned in a another stellar performance offensively, recording 16 kills in tonight’s loss to UMES, 3-1. The Lady Pirates could not recover from an early two game defecit, 30-14 and 30-26 handed to them by the Lady Hawks. HU fought back taking the third game, 30-28, but lost in the fourth 30-20.
Sophomore Ese Ighedosa (Kansas City, Mo./Center Senior HS) contributed 11 kills to the Pirate offense while junior Ebonie Vincent (Temecula, Calif./UC-Riverside) added eight kills. Sophomore Jasmin Elder (Upper Marlboro, Md./ Gwynn HS) was also productive on the offensive front dishing out a match-high 31 assists.
Defensively Ighedosa had a season-high seven total blocks, while Hoskins chipped in with a season-best of her own, six blocks. Sophomore Alyssa Jackson (Fort Wayne, Ind./ Snider HS) tallied a team-high 13 digs while Elder added seven for the match.
Hampton (7-16, 2-5 MEAC) out blocked the Hawks 12-3, while UMES (14-12, 7-3 MEAC) out dug the Pirates 61-48.
Caylin Woodward and Holiday Eller led the Lady Hawks offensively with 12 kills apiece, while Yael Rozner added 11 kills and 11 digs. Stephanie Braxton was strong defensively with a match-high 18 digs.
The Hampton University volleyball team will return to the net tomorrow, Oct. 27, to face off against Delaware State at 6 p.m. inside Holland Hall.
